We tend to get a little heavy on the rock, rap and roll when it comes to noteworthy dates, faces and places... but take a scroll through the EVR archives, and you'll find that the NYC-polished (bred, not born) Madonna pops up on any number of shows from The Rest is Noise and Authentic Sh*t to Sandy Acres Sound Lab and Pizza Party, Belly of the Beast, Accidental Rhythm and many others. We're almost 100% certain that Black N Blue Takeover has never once spun Mama Madge, but it is today, however, that her superb 3rd studio album, True Blue, saw it's proper release 25 years ago.
True Blue is often credited as the album that turned Madonna on the path to superstardom. Commercially, it became an international success, reaching the top of the charts in 28 countries, an unprecedented achievement at that time. It also became the world's top-selling album of 1986. Worldwide sales of the album reached 25 million copies, seven million of those being sold in the States, which earned it a seven times platinum certification by the RIAA. Five singles were released from the album, each recognized as true Madonna classics: Live to Tell, Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, True Blue and La Isla Bonita.
So today we put on our lace knickers and fingerless gloves, say "good on ya Madonna" and then return to our normally scheduled content. We'll see ya again in another 25 years.
