Atlas Sound- Logos Album Review
It starts out slow, a little detached and disjointed and then starts to pick up on a decidedly different melody. Bradford Cox's latest album for side-project Atlas Sound, Logos, is not quite like anything we have heard from him before.
Even for those of you who were never a fan of the eerier sounds Cox had to offer in the work of Atlas Sound this album is truly worth listening to. It still features the far away voice and eager guitars but there's an almost surfy element to a lot of the tracks. There are tambourines, Beach Boys like harmonies, and simple drums. It's a sound that is something more upbeat from Cox's usual work. The cheerful song in which Noah Lennox (Panda Bear of Animal Collective) asks "what did you want to be when you grew up?" and he isn't the only notable featured on the album. Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab is featured on the vocals for "Quick Canal."
Another mentionable track is "Shelia" which is all too likable, really. This album is certainly worth giving Atlas Sound another chance, even if you aren't into electro ambience as the next guy, it's pretty fantastic from beginning to end.

Photos from CMJ Opening Night
Stereogum's CMJ opening night showcase from The Studio @ Webster Hall was broadcast last night (October 20th). It was packed and a great time was had by all. Check the photos for some proof. We'll be posting the audio soon...
True Panther Records' artist Glasser opened the Stereogum CMJ showcase at Webster Hall. The band's sole member, Cameron Mesirow, who is currently based in LA, records Glasser's songs in her own bedroom. The result is a dreamy ambient sound that heavily relies on both the dance/tribal rhythmic beats, and her incredible vocal range.

Free Energy are a quintet that hail from Philly, who's melodic sound is reminiscent of Thin Lizzy's harmonious achievements and T.Rex's masterful songwriting. Not only do they have catchy hooks, but they have heavy power chord riffage and clapping. The band was discovered by DFA's Jonathan Galkin, and soon went into the studio to start recording demoes with him. Their classic rock influence was well appreciated by Galkin, who understood their arena rock-look out for the full length debut "Stuck on Nothing" in early 2010.

The Golden Filter are a New York based electro/disco pop duo whose driving drum triggers, and Goldfrapp-esque vocal melodies create a sort of euphoric, while dancing like a maniac live experience. The duo consists of Penelope, a classically trained opera singer, and Stephen who focuses on the more instrumental aspects of the band. They got signed to the Dummy Magazine label, and have received a lot of attention considering it's only been about a year since the first 7" single. Expect to hear more about them in the near future...

Cold Cave was started by long time Philadelphia local Wesley Eisold, previously of Give Up the Ghost, and XO Skeletons. The groups female vocalist, is multi-instrumentalist ex-Xiu Xiu member Caralee McElroy, whose vocals add a different dimension to the overall gloomy pre industrial and darkwave sound of the group. Their live show is dominated by danceable synth pop lead melodies, and steady drum machine beats. They have just signed to Matador Records, and recently opened for experimental music veterans Faust at Music Hall of Williamsburg. They were also coined Stereogum's "Band to Watch" this year, so be sure not to miss their live appearances during CMJ.

DJ Sets:
Telepathe, Dum Dum Girls, and Fools Gold will all be spinning DJ sets through out the night. Social Registry's Telepathe are Brooklyn's electronic music DIYers with an experimental, heavy bass, and visual sound. Dum Dum Girls' have a more garagey meets early 90s shoegaze sound with lo fi production, and gripping melodies. Fool's Gold's poppy Moz inspired tunes should make way for a very fun dance-floor.
