As part of the Museum of Modern Art's film exhbition, Looking at Music: Side 2, the 2009 film directed by Céline Danhier, Blank City, will be screened tonight at 7 p.m. The documentary illustrates New York's underground filmmaking scene between 1977 and 1987 in the days of No Wave.
These were films made under miniscule budgets and empowering bravado. Independent filmmakers were working with contemporary musicians and artists, all of whom were living amongst the biggest of the nobodies in this hidden from plain view movement.
Blank City includes interviews with Jim Jarmusch, Steve Buscemi, Lydia Lunch, Lizzie Borden, Thurston Moore, Debbie Harry, and so many more. The music, the art, a large selection of film clips, the don't give a fuck-isms, and the profuse talent of Danhier illuminate this strong presence in the East Village 1970s art scene.
The cost is $10 for adults, $6 for students, $5 for guests, and free for members of the museum. The entire film exhibition, Looking at Music, will last from September 21 through November 30. In that time there will be many, many screenings of what look spectacular films of that era and films that look into the art and music that found its home in garages, in basements, and on the street as opposed to contemporary galleries or venues.
