Stereogum's CMJ opening night showcase from The Studio @ Webster Hall was broadcast last night (October 20th). It was packed and a great time was had by all. We've got photos from Samantha West below plus interviews with the bands by our crack-pot DJs.

Glasser
True Panther Records' artist Glasser opened the Stereogum CMJ showcase at Webster Hall. The band's sole member, Cameron Mesirow, who is currently based in LA, records Glasser's songs in her own bedroom. The result is a dreamy ambient sound that heavily relies on both the dance/tribal rhythmic beats, and her incredible vocal range.

Free Energy
Free Energy are a quintet that hail from Philly, who's melodic sound is reminiscent of Thin Lizzy's harmonious achievements and T.Rex's masterful songwriting. Not only do they have catchy hooks, but they have heavy power chord riffage and clapping. The band was discovered by DFA's Jonathan Galkin, and soon went into the studio to start recording demoes with him. Their classic rock influence was well appreciated by Galkin, who understood their arena rock-look out for the full length debut "Stuck on Nothing" in early 2010.

The Golden Filter
The Golden Filter are a New York based electro/disco pop duo whose driving drum triggers, and Goldfrapp-esque vocal melodies create a sort of euphoric, while dancing like a maniac live experience. The duo consists of Penelope, a classically trained opera singer, and Stephen who focuses on the more instrumental aspects of the band. They got signed to the Dummy Magazine label, and have received a lot of attention considering it's only been about a year since the first 7" single. Expect to hear more about them in the near future...

Cold Cave
Cold Cave was started by long time Philadelphia local Wesley Eisold, previously of Give Up the Ghost, and XO Skeletons. The groups female vocalist, is multi-instrumentalist ex-Xiu Xiu member Caralee McElroy, whose vocals add a different dimension to the overall gloomy pre industrial and darkwave sound of the group. Their live show is dominated by danceable synth pop lead melodies, and steady drum machine beats. They have just signed to Matador Records, and recently opened for experimental music veterans Faust at Music Hall of Williamsburg. They were also coined Stereogum's "Band to Watch" this year, so be sure not to miss their live appearances during CMJ.
