Pop-Noir Singer/Songwriter, Nicole Atkins on BBiB

It's kind of an awesome story that Nicole and I met over our love for Swedish psychedelic folk-rock. After the guys from Life On Earth! played live on BBiB a couple months ago, we walked outside the EVR booth and found Nicole Atkins there waiting to talk to Mattias and Martin, whom she had met when recording an album in Sweden a couple years ago...and whose music she loves.

Well, after meeting, I looked up some of Nicole's work and found that she's an absolutely badass singer and equally badass songwriter and that you all needed to hear her play live on Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio. So that's what's goin' down on Thursday at noon. You'll want to hear this! Not to mention, Nicole's bringing along her slide guitar player.

Here's a couple Amazon reviewer quotes about Nicole that I love:

This is how songs should be constructed and arranged. She's the Mozart of our time. - J.K. Peffers, Denver

...a cross between Janis Joplin and Fiona Apple, with a twist of 50's retro and a sprinkle of goth for seasoning. - Erik F., Boston

On Neptune City, Jersey girl Nicole Atkins summons the iconographic spirits of Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison, Loretta Lynn, lets them live inside her, and proceeds to transcend them into what we hear on this record. In this genre-less record of darkly psychedelic Jersey-shore romanticism, Nicole Atkins throws her hat into that ring of artists managing to straddle the fence-line between indie and mainstream credibility and ends up being sucessful in this pursuit. - K. Porter, Austin

The Main Street Gospel Live at EVR Thursday

Hey there, Beyonders!

I'm happy to report that we will have a kickass live performance from a kickass new band called The Main Street Gospel, in the EVR booth on Beyond Beyond is Beyond this Thursday. Their beautifully fuzzed-out classic rock style shines bright on their Tee Pee Records debut, Love Will Have Her Revenge. Dig 'I Won't Be Stayin'' below...

The Main Street Gospel - I Won't Be Stayin'

Here's a great quick intro to the band from Dan Epstein at Shockhound (where you can also download the free mp3):

Download FREE MP3 HERE

Here at ShockHound, the only thing we love more than getting turned on to killer new music is when we can turn you on to it before anyone else does. Which is why we're so stoked to present the world premiere of "I Won't Be Stayin'," a fuzz-caked track from Love Will Have Her Revenge, the forthcoming full-length debut by the Main Street Gospel. Lodged somewhere between the bluesy scuzz of the Black Keys and the haunted highway ramblings of Neil Young, "I Won't Be Stayin'" is one of those rare cuts that sounds both oddly familiar and intriguingly fresh. And you can only download it for FREE from ShockHound, baby!

Formed in Columbus, Ohio in 2005 by former Brian Jonestown Massacre tambourine shaker Barry Dean (vocals, guitar), Ryan "Tito" Ida (bass) and Adam Scoppa (drums), the Main Street Gospel's brand of "mystic trip-rock" caught the ear of fellow bearded Ohioan (and Black Keys guitarist) Dan Auerbach, who produced and pressed up a couple of their songs on an indie seven-inch back in 2008. One thing led to another, and the band signed to Tee Pee Records early this year. Love Will Have Her Revenge, a wonderful album which touches upon everything from Byrds-y country rock to Spiritualized-type psychedelic mantras, will drop June 29. But hey, you don't need to wait until then to bathe in the cosmic vibes of the Main Street Gospel. Just click on the link above, and grab that free MP3 before it's gone like a late spring breeze.

— Dan Epstein

So tune in Thursday to Beyond Beyond is Beyond and here the Main Street Gospel live in the iconic East Village Radio booth!

And if you're in the NY area, be sure to see them play live, along with the excellent Hopewell and White Hills Thursday night at Perfect Prescription at Secret Project Robot!

BBiB...Not Beyond Giving Shit Away to You

On this Thursday's Beyond Beyond is Beyond show, I have no guests lined up, but I will be playing AND giving away all kinds of jams throughout the show.

.

GIVEAWAYS THIS WEEK!

.
First of all, thanks to our friends at Bella Union, I'll be giving away a copy of the album I was raving about on last week's show...Queen of Denmark by John Grant! God, it's good.

Secondly, I'll be announcing the winner of last week's Rock Trivia question contest. The question was to name the Vanilla Fudge drummer that went on to form Cactus after Vanilla Fudge dissolved...or melted. Several listeners emailed with the correct name...Carmine Appice. The surprise is a killer surprise box set of music that I will announce on the show Thursday, along with the winner's name.

And for good measure, I will also be giving away a Doors-related item in this week's Rock Trivia contest!

And I might decide to throw in one more giveaway too...because it's just that kind of week.

So, for your chance to win many rockular things and to be pleasantly stimulated for 2 hours, tune in to East Village Radio on Thursday, noon eastern...and we'll venture BEYOND-OND-OND-ond-nd-d
.

Rest In Peace, to the Great Ronnie James Dio

I'm a music lover and I've always stolen music.  I've always bought music too, but when you crave music the way that I do, you've got to do some stealing. It's a balance.

Well, I guess the earliest form of stealing came from holding the tape recorder up to the radio to record songs. Then it moved on to recording albums onto cassette from either records or factory cassettes. Then on to actually stealing cassettes from fine retailers, such as Sears. Then on to CD burning, then on to file-sharing and downloading full albums via the internet. One could even argue that buying used vinyl is a glorified way of stealing. Hey, the record company doesn't get paid when I buy an album for $1 at a street fair or in a shop.

Anyway, the point is...the balance. The good and the bad. The evil and divine. The heaven and hell. The dualities of which Ronnie James Dio always sang.

One of the cassettes that I stole from Sears when I was a 12-year old newbie rocker was a classic duality. It contained the full Ozzy-led Paranoid album on one side and on the other side, the full Dio-led Heaven and Hell album. Well, Paranoid is the obvious classic there, but it was the then-surprise other side that knocked me out...and that I played over and over. It was a time when I was just learning about Dio. Shit, I was just learning about everybody! But I was just putting the pieces together that this guy who I knew was currently in a killer band called Dio was named Ronnie James Dio and actually took over for Ozzy in Black Sabbath! So that's what this is! Whoa!

Fucking mind-blowing.

Well, the stealing of cassettes didn't last too long, as a friend and I were busted at Sears the first time that the friend tried to make off with some jams. Our first lesson in crime and punishment. But not before I put some classic music in my library and my soul.

And Ronnie has now completed life's biggest duality. Death. But not before putting some classic music in all of our souls. If anyone can make peace with the afterlife, it's got to be Ronnie. And his music will always go on to be cherished by lovers of the best duality in the world...rock & roll! ...Or is that just a hendiadys? Well, it's close enough for rock & roll!

Cheers to you, Ronnie, may you rest in peace. Thanks for all the great music and magic that you put into the world. You rock! And, more importantly, WE ROCK!

Exmagma's Andy Goldner Interviewed on BBiB!

I'm very pleased to announce that I'll be interviewing Exmagma's Andy Goldner on the next Beyond Beyond is Beyond show! I've been diggin' the experimental kraut-proggers, Exmagma since I stumbled on their first and second albums from '73 and '74 a few years ago. And then my mind completely blew when I heard Exmagma 3, which was done in '75 and never released until 2006!!! Then the pieces of my blown mind got together to form another human being who now lives inside my head, when I heard Andy Goldner's 1978 solo album, Infinity.

And check out this amazing Andy Goldner promo video from '78!

And you can find all the Exmagma and Goldner albums at Anthology Recordings

And tune in to East Village Radio at noon eastern on Thursday to hear my interview with Andy!

Plants and Animals Go Beyond...

Hey Beyondites,

This week's Beyond Beyond is Beyond show is quite special, as I'll be welcoming Canadian 'post-classic rockers,' Plants and Animals. I've been championing these guys since I started the BBiB show early last year, spinning stuff from their Parc Avenue album quite often. And they just played a sold out show with Ra Ra Riot at Union Hall on Tuesday...with lots of touring ahead of them.

And now, with the release of their new album La La Land, they will be performing songs from the album live in the East Village Radio booth, 5 days before it's release date...of 4/20!

Well, look, here they are now, petting street corner kitties and air guitarin'...

So come join me, and Plants and Animals, at noon eastern Thursday at East Village Radio!

Diggin' this New Ariel Pink Joint

Hey dudes, Ariel Pink and his Haunted Graffiti outfit have a new album coming out June 8th called Before Today. I'm totally diggin' the first song, 'Round and Round,' which you can dig below. It's kinda nice that they've stepped out of that super lo-fi production. I always liked Ariel Pink songs but always wanted to hear them with a little more sound quality...and Before Today looks to be just that. Cool album cover too, no?

Arthur Brown Interview and Micky Jones Tribute

This Thursday on the ol' East Village Radio show that I like to call Beyond Beyond is Beyond, I will be talking to the gold-throated 'god of hellfire' himself, the amazing Arthur Brown. As seen here freaking the fuck out...

Esoteric Recordings is reissuing much of Arthur's works, including the groundbreaking, earth-shaking Crazy World of Arthur Brown album, as well as Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come albums.

I will also be paying tribute to MAN's fantastic guitarist/vocalist/songwriter, Micky Jones, who just passed away on March 10th, losing the battle to a brain tumor that he had been fighting for years. Micky will live on for many through the fine, fine music that he leaves behind. R.I.P. Micky...and thank you.

Coincidentally, Esoteric Recordings also did the superb remastering job with the MAN catalog as well, so this Thursday will be Esoteric Fest on Beyond Beyond is Beyond.

So listen live at noon eastern, Thursday, March 18th to East Village Radio and let's celebrate jams together! Sound good?

Hazy Bent-Sound Rockers, the Growlers on BBiB

Hey Bologna-Boppin' Beyonders,

I'm happy to announce that this week Beyond Beyond is Beyond will welcome So-Cal bent rockers, the Growlers to the show. I've been diggin' these guys ever since Everloving sent me their new Are You In or Out? record. I lifted the 'bent sound' description from the Everloving website because it really fits the Growlers' sound nicely:
...this “bent sound” has been perfected in their live act that some onlookers call “groovy” and or “sick”. The groovy unexcelled value in Lo fidelity sound is their stock and trade.
So get yourself further acquainted below with the "Something Someone Jr" video and then bring your ears to the far out reaches of Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio on Thursday, 2/18, from noon to 2 EST. Here's how to get there...

Chilly Gonzales Goes Beyond...

...on Beyond Beyond is Beyond, Thursday February 4th at noon eastern, live on East Village Radio.

Fresh from his Guinness World Record for longest live piano performance by any individual (27 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds), his piano battle with Andrew WK in New York, and a sold-our run at London’s La Pigalle Club, Paris-based pianist and showman Chilly Gonzales crosses the Atlantic for four “Piano Talk Shows” in New York City in February.

The self-proclaimed "Entertainist" will play every Thursday at Joe’s Pub, finally giving NYC a full-on taste of his futuristic cabaret performance. Each show will feature a guest from Gonzo's extended musical family, each promising to bring fresh surprises of their own!

Feb 4 w/ guest SIA

Feb 11 w/ guest Andrew WK

Feb 18 w/ guest DJ A-Trak plus surprise guest

Feb 25 w/ guest Princess Superstar

Chilly is currently celebrating two new releases: a spellbinding 7” piano remake of Erol Alkan and Boys Noize's club banger “Waves” (coupled with a spoken music lesson on the B-side) and his 4-album live Guinness World Record set "The Works" (released through Believe digital). Listen to the “Waves” remake here!

Meanwhile, the Grammy-nominated arranger/producer’s collaborations continue to multiply: he's co-writing and producing the major-label debut of Thecocknbullkid, co-writing songs with Jarvis Cocker for "Get Him to the Greek" (a Russell Brand rock-movie spoof) and shooting new episodes of his cult web-TV show "SUPERPRODUCER" (presented exclusively with DailyMotion). Watch the hilarious sketch with gay British rapper Dorian (ahem) Gay here.

Best of all, Chilly is currently putting the finishing touches on his new full-length, Ivory Tower, will is expected to be released in the US later this year.

Having already bagged the (also self-proclaimed) title of President of the Berlin Underground, Chilly Gonzales can now add another notch on his belt after successfully challenging Andrew WK to a piano-off at Joe’s Pub in New York last September and premiering his Jarvis Cocker collaboration “Francophobia” at London’s La Pigalle Club in November.

For a taste of the musical mayhem and unique extreme entertainment in store for Chilly’s upcoming New York City shows, check out his piano dual with Andrew WK here (or here).

All Piano Talk Shows will feature PianoVision, a video installation created by Nina Rhode, aka Ninja Pleasure. Reminiscent of a silent movie, PianoVision allows the audience to see a video projection of the piano’s 88 keys, along with the master’s finger work.

So tune in to Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio on Thursday at noon eastern-time, and listen to us shoot the shit. I'm bringing a Casiotone keyboard in hopes that Chilly will tickle our ivory fancies a bit!

See ya then...

Cheersy!

Mike

Imelda May on the Grammys and Beyond

If you watched the Grammys (as I did for some reason), you know that the highlight of the whole event was when Jeff Beck took the stage for the Les Paul 'How High the Moon' tribute with an old friend of the Beyond Beyond is Beyond show, Imelda May on vocals. If you missed, dig...

I'm proud to say that this silver-throated Irish rockabilly knockout was on my Beyond Beyond is Beyond show on East Village Radio back in September, so I just thought I'd share the interview again. She and her husband and amazing guitarist, Darrel Higham, also performed an exclusive acoustic tune for us at the end of the interview.

Check out the news piece on the EVR website where there is a link to the interview

OR

Go straight to the interview

I also chose her Love Tattoo album as one of the Best of 2009.

The Best of 2009 Continued: ASTRA

So I wanted to post something about a band that I accidentally left off my official 'Best Albums of 2009' list. This is San Diego-based (oddly enough) new progressive rock band Astra, and their 2009 album The Weirding is one that I listened to a lot last year.

I found this really cool random user-made video for one of Astra's songs and thought you should check it out. So dig in below. There's a whole lot of radicity going on... THEN, if you dig that, listen to the whole album on YouTube. It's all HERE. Pretty amazing.

Then, after you're blown away by how good it is and surprised at how modern it is, BUY that shit bro. I'm def looking for Astra to head to the East Coast!

Cheers!

Chris Squire of YES on BBiB Thursday

As seminal progressive rock band Yes gets ready to head out on the North American road for a tour that will last exactly one month, we get the chance to talk to Yes bassist, Chris Squire, on Thursday on Beyond Beyond is Beyond. So tune in to East Village Radio on January 14th at noon and hear me cower before another one of my idols. Okay not really, but yeah, kinda.

Stuff I wanna talk to him about: current lineup, studio plans, Jon Anderson, Fish Out of Water, XYZ project with Jimmy Page in the early-80s, Benoit David, Oliver Wakeman and what modern music Chris listens to. So let's see if I have time, or just the memory, to ask him about all these things.

The Requisite Year-End Best Albums List...2009

If you blog, I guess you just gotta do it...so here's mine. And no, you're not gonna get a 'best albums o' the decade' list outta me! It was quite hard enough to think back to early '09, thank you very much. And yes, albums are still pertinent and will become more and more important as the industry starts its slow digression back to the vinyl days. I'm not Nostradamus and shit, I just know it's headed that way. It's what's the people want...records are just plain sexy! The vinyl is how you'll listen at home (or inside places) and the mp3s (download card included inside vinyl jacket) will make it portable and shuffle-able.

Another thing to keep in mind, I don't typically sit around ranking records as I listen to them, so this is a bit of a stretch for me. What I'm presenting here is a list of things I liked in 2009. This includes brand-new shit and also old albums that were re-released during 2009...because I listen to a lot of old music, in case you didn't know from looking at me. So let's go through the motions here and get to listing...in no particular order (and I'm not sure how many are going to be listed either until I put them all down, so bear with me). Here we go:
The Entrance Band - s/t : Here's a great psych album from a new(er) band that's not afraid of slinky guitar licks. As the mainstream indie-rock world keeps proving to us what their music is NOT, bands like The Entrance Band will do what they do, not concerned with what they are not, but proving that the most interesting thing is what it IS. And what it is is groove, swing, blues, passion, psych, sex and plenty of reverb. On Ecstatic Peace Records. Well played, Thurston.
The Aliens - Luna : Amazing follow-up to the debut Astronomy for Dogs from 2007 by this Beta Band offshoot. Here are the deets from Wiki: The Aliens are a Scottish band consisting of former Beta Band members Gordon Anderson (aka Lone Pigeon, lead vocals, guitar), John Maclean keyboards, backing vocals) and Robin Jones (drums, backing vocals). They formed in 2005 ( following the split of The Beta Band the previous year, and frontman Gordon Anderson falling ill to "acute psychosis". Anderson is now out of hospital and has been off medication for some time. This is what the Beta Band promised to be from their 3 Eps debut, which will always be a classic, but what their other albums never delivered on. They lost sight of their mission or something. Well, The Aliens pick back up where the 'good' Beta Band left off. Cheers!

Imelda May - Love Tattoo : Soul rockabilly blues R&B...like in the days when such genres were integrated and made a beautiful noise together. I was lucky enough to be able to interview Imelda May when she was in NYC and got to see her (and her tremendous band) perform live to a packed Piano's house on a weeknight...Uh-maze-ing! This girl can belt 'em out. And you need to hear her band play live too. Perfectness...really. Here's a link to the interview from Beyond Beyond is Beyond 9/24/09.

The Growlers - Are You In or Out? : I love this album. I guess you'd call it fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched, hazy surf-guitar garage rock. Easy breezy shit that I'm looking forward to seeing played live when these Costa Mesa, California bros make it out East - which I just found out will happen at Brooklyn's Union Pool on Valentine's Day '10. Hopefully my lover will want to go with... Speaking of lovers, this album is on the great Everloving label.

Made in Sweden - Made in England : This re-release from the top-notch Esoteric Recordings label in England, came in just under the '09 gun, released on December 22nd, 2009. I have been in love with Esoteric Recordings output ever since I was turned on to them by some MAN reissues that started coming out a couple years ago. Since then, I've closely followed Esoteric's output and even started a segment on my radio show that features Esoteric's offerings. Well, this is one originally from 1970 that I just very recently received and am now addicted to. And it once again begs the question 'why are the Swedish so advanced in progressive rock music?' Why ask why, bros...just dig it. This is superb blues-jazz-prog rock. Long live Esoteric!

White Denim - Fits : Fukkin' fantastic album! To be lazy, here are a couple quotes that I really like about the album... "Fits locks in and finds a groove strong enough to hang a hook on" -Pitchfork "Like Ike and Tina Turner..... White Denim never do anything nice and easy. The bands chopped up punk delirium is effortless sorcery, evoking Talking Heads' dancing-bones rock, the dervish thrash of the Minutemen and the Strokes' pneumatic-guitar pop...White Denim is not simple work, but everything you get is nice and rough."- David Fricke, Rolling Stone "It kinda makes me wanna screw." - My wife

Mother Hips - Pacific Dust : The Mother Hips are consistently great and are consistently not recognized enough. Lots of great dual guitar interplay, amazing sunny California harmonies, and tons of hooks all over the place.

Life on Earth! - A Space Water Loop : Like The Amazing who are making their mark right now with a fantastic debut, Life On Earth! is a Dungen offshoot to keep the Dungen players busy and creative while Dungen leader, Gustav takes his time with his muse and his turntablism. Yeah, go figs. Life on Earth! is helmed by Dungen bassist, Mattias Gustavsson and is an excellent collection of Swedish psych-folk music...sung in English. Again, my theory stands that Swedes have and extra music gene.

Hopewell - Good Good Deperation : These next two albums represent bands that made really good albums which only tell part of the story of how amazing they are as live bands. Tee Pee Records made a great choice stepping out on a limb for Hopewell, which isn't their traditional fare...but Tee Pee is really starting to release a lot of killer stuff (Weird Owl, The Weight, Spindrift, Night Horse, Imaad Wasif) and is one of the great small creative label forces out there now. Pick up this album and then get yer ass out to see them live and let them show you their complete power. Good Good Desperation definitely will make you more than curious for the live show...and it's the kind of album that gives you the feeling that Hopewell is on the verge of creating their masterpiece.

Sleepy Sun - Embrace : So, this is the other band who made a fantastic album, this one on ATP Recordings, that only hints at how great a live band they are. I was lucky enough to see both Sleepy Sun and Hopewell this summer at the super-exclusive, only-for-cool-cats-like-me All Tomorrow's Parties festival in upstate New York...and quite frankly, both bands blew my fukkin' head off. In a good way! Again, another great album that will tease you into coming out to see 'em live. Don't miss the chance!

Exmagma - Exmagma 3 : I started doing a segment on my East Village Radio show that features the excellent re-release output of Anthology Recordings this year, because they digitally re-release some of the coolest and rarest psych, vintage rock, folk, freak, prog and other great rock forms. This is one of the coolest that I came across this year. Having already been acquainted with Exmagma's first two 'official' albums, that were certainly more Miles 70s-era improvy sounding with very few vocals. Well, this more jagged-rocky, trippy-vocaled one was made as a double album by the band to follow their first two. Their label said 'we don't wanna release a double album'...and so the band shelved it and soon broke up. It was finally released way down the road and now Anthology's got it on their site, ready for you to download...along with the first two Exmagma albums and singer/guitarist, Andy Goldner's killer solo album, Infinity. Get Exmagma 3 now if you dig adventurous rock!

Rubblebucket - s/t : This one came out of the blue and landed on my CD player...or iTunes or whatever. I had not been seeking out this kind of music, but it found me, and it strapped me in for a rubble-bumpy ride! Is African music super-cool right now? Is Fela really a Broadway musical right now? Do people really hate hippies? Well, whatever the case...this is an album to be reckoned with. But instead of reckoning with it, listen to it! Yeah, that's better. Serious groove, a knock-you-out magic horn section, quirky guitar, odd drum rhythms, trippy dub effects, and an amazing spell-casting female vocal, of course with plenty of 'verb! I can't wait to see 'em live! This one of was may be the nicest surprise of the year.

Zoos of Berlin - Taxis : This one was actually another great surprise that Sinister Foxy turned me on to. It's modern, it's sleek, it's complex, it's Steely Dan, it's Talking Heads, it's uplifting, it's fun, it's serious, and it's a bunch of other stuff...like REALLY GOOD! Everyone that I played this album for fell in love with it and could compare it to nothing else than any other modern indie bands are doing right now. Truly unique and quirky music made by some serious players who remember what it is to groove.

Detroit guys, btw. They're still making plenty of good music there. Cars...not so much.

The Beatles - Remastered Catalog : This has to be in there, doesn't it? Such a perfect job was done on these albums...and the world would've collectively cringed if it had been otherwise. This music demands perfection, and the remastering/mixing job that they did is incredible. Who knew that the best music ever made could sound even better?! I have all the stereo versions, now I may need to geek out and score all the remastered mono albums! Most of the stuff up until Rubber Soul/Revolver are meant to be heard mono anyway.

Btw, is the White Album the best rock album ever made?

Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears - Mad Valentines : I swear to god, I don't know what's wrong with me, but I almost forgot to add these guys to the list AGAIN this year! And I did the same with their Flight of the Knife album last year! Maybe it's because they're so much drastically better than most of the modern bands you hear these days, and maybe it's because they're sound doesn't seem to quite fit in whatever 'era' we're in right now. But BSST are pure theatrical bubblegum, prog-pop escapist bliss...and you're missing out on all of that if you don't know 'em. So get to know 'em and come join the party. And don't miss them live! .

Very honorable mentions
: Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (as if you needed to see that one on another list), Real Estate - s/t, Man- s/t (reissue on Esoteric Recordings), Ben Kweller - Changing Horses, BLK JKS - After Robots, The Blakes - Souvenir, La Fleur Fatale - Silent Revolution, Monsters of Folk - s/t, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned...

What else am I missing? What are your faves o' the year? Lemme know below...

The Velvet Underground and David Fricke at NYPL

I went to see Rolling Stone's David Fricke interview Lou Reed, Maureen 'Moe' Tucker, and Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground last night at the New York Public Library. No, there was no performance or reunion announcement or even anything remotely deep that the VU hardcore wouldn't know already.

IMG_1367

I must admit that I originally bought tickets immediately after seeing these lines on the NYPL's website, which really painted an ambiguous picture:
Today, the Velvet Underground are the stars they always deserved to be, with a rich and still mysterious story that continues to unfold: in the new visual collection, The Velvet Underground: New York Art, and tonight, in this unprecedented reunion of Reed, Tucker and Yule-the words, music and rhythm of The Velvet Underground.
Yeah, I was thinking there would be a performance...at least for the couple minutes it took to buy the tickets. All that said, it was a very cool night of discussion in which I got some decent pictures and confirmed a few things in my mind...

IMG_1402

Lou Reed is indeed an asshole

IMG_1345

Lou reed hates everyone except Andy and Moe

IMG_1331

Lou Reed thinks the VU was the best band ever

IMG_1395

I have a lot of respect for David fricke.

IMG_1327

I like to knock VU off their pedestal.

IMG_1329

I love VU records and wanna hear one now.

IMG_1346

Many great bands go unnoticed...VU is not one, fortunately.

BBiB Special Edtion w/ the Reigning Sound, Friday!

HOLA, BEYONDERS!

Check out this special BBiB edition with the Reigning Sound that I'll be doing on Friday, 11/20.  Should be a blast.  Come along, um-kay?  Deets follow:

http://www.intheredrecords.com/media/8x10's/Reigning-Sound_web.jpg

This Friday starting at 2pm we've got a special edition of Beyond Beyond Is Beyond with Reigning Sound, who are in town for a Nov. 19th show in New Jersey at Maxwells and a Nov. 20th show at Brooklyn's Southpaw, with The Swingin’ Neckbreakers and The Jay Vons. The band will be in the booth for an interview and hopefully EVR's Mike Newman will squeeze a couple acoustic tracks out of Greg Cartwright.

Listen Live, Friday @ 2-4pm ET.

Founded by Memphis blues-punk legend Greg Cartwright -- a former member of the Oblivians, the Compulsive Gamblers, and '68 Comeback -- Reigning Sound fuse the hot-wired energy of garage rock with the deep emotional resonance of classic soul music in a manner that suggests a cross between the early Rolling Stones and the Sonics. Featuring Cartwright on vocals and guitar, Jeremy Scott on bass, Greg Roberson on drums, and Alex Greene on keyboards and guitar, Reigning Sound made their recorded debut with a three-song 7" in May of 2001; their first full-length album, Break Up Break Down, was released a month later on Sympathy for the Record Industry.

http://www.intheredrecords.com/media/8x10's/Reigning-Sound_web.jpg

In August of 2002, the group upped the rock quotient on its second album (and first for In the Red), Time Bomb High School. Alex Greene dropped out as a full-time group member by the time 2004's Too Much Guitar was released, though he did appear on the disc as a guest musician, and the band followed its release with more touring, both as a headliner and once again as opener for the Hives.

http://www.intheredrecords.com/media/8x10's/Reigning-Sound_web.jpg

In September 2005 Reigning Sound released Home for Orphans through Sympathy for the Record Industry. It featured reworked versions of Too Much Guitar material along with some unreleased tracks. They also recorded and released two live albums in 2005, Live at Maxwell's and Live at Goner Records. After a long break from recording under their own name (though Cartwright and the new lineup of bassist David Wayne Gay, drummer Lance Wille, and keyboardist Dave Amels backed ex-Shangri-La Mary Weiss on her 2007 album Dangerous Game), the band resurfaced in 2009 with a new studio record for In the Red, Love and Curses.  [From AllMusic]

Rick Wakeman on BBiB and CD/DVD Giveaway!

Well my friends, I've been listening to Yes since I was 11 years old and am a total fanboy. Do I agree with their decision to replace Jon Anderson with Canadian tribute-band bro? Hell no! But alas, the Yes machine must roll on, whether or not they run all their decisions by me. But I digress...

The point I'm trying to make is that this here Yes fanboy will be talking to the most famous Yes keyboardist, Rick Wakeman on Beyond Beyond is Beyond this Thursday! Wowzers...this makes the second Yes member I've had the opportunity to interview!

Rick has always had a successful solo career, and we'll be talking about his latest project The Six Wives of Henry VIII - Live at the Hampton Court Palace, which is an epic staging from earlier this year of his classic 1973 solo album. He had been petitioning for years to stage the show there at Henry VIII's house and was finally granted the wish. And Rick is not known to skimp on his projects...the results are absolutely stunning andthe sound is fukkin' tremendous!

And thanks to my friends at Eagle Rock Entertainment and Kayos Productions, I will be giving away copies of the DVD and also the CD to lucky emailers (beyondbeyondisbeyond -at- gmail.com) and Tweeters (http://twitter.com/BBiB). Just be sure to mention your favorite Rick Wakeman joint to be entered!

Oh yeah, and one of the winners will be chosen from the comment section below...

So be sure to tune in to Beyond Beyond is Beyond Thursday at noon eastern on East Village Radio to hear Rick and I shoot the shit and for the usual weekly rock & roll bombast that you're used to!

Gentle Giant and Guest DJ, Jess Rotter on BBiB!

Hell-oh Bea Yawnders!

Hope you all had a hellish Halloween weekend! I've got an amazing show coming up on Thursday at noon (eastern) on East Village Radio; a show that should drive Erin Pope crackers! Not only will I be talking to prog-legend Gentle Giant lead singer, Derek Shulman...but I will also have artist, Jess Rotter of Rotter & Friends, and Kemado/Mexican Summer/Anthology Recordings joining me as guest DJ all show long, as we'll try to match each other song for song and talk about the days of covered wagons.

This show's gonna be fully radical, so be sure to catch it live on Beyond Beyond is Beyond at noon (eastern) Thursday on East Village Radio! Plus I'll be taking attendance and there will be a pop quiz!

On November 10th, 2009 Gentle Giant will be digitally releasing seven of their best-known albums and tracks in digital form for the very first time via their own Alucard label through EMI Music's Label Services unit. This progressive rock band, which was active from 1970 through 1980, was made up of multi-instrumentalists, and lived to expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular." The group’s dozen albums combine a range of musical styles—jazz, pop, classical, British soul, rock, blues, medieval, pop, and blues.

In a Glass House, The Power & The Glory, Free Hand, In'terview, Playing The Fool, The Missing Piece and Giant For a Day will become available through all digital channels. More Gentle Giant music will be available in a variety of formats in 2010, starting with the January release of the seven CDs Re-Mastered from the original 1⁄4 inch tapes through Hi-Resolution (24bit 96k) transfer. First quarter of 2010 will also find box sets and Limited Edition Vinyl LPs.

Gentle Giant on Facebook

About the guest DJ: Artist Jess Rotter, a woman that promotes rock bands by day at Kemado Records/Mexican Summer in New York, is the mastermind of the whimsical t-shirt line, Rotter and Friends. The tees’ prints are playful, heartfelt and inspired by rare music of the 1960’s and 70’s. Part of the indie-label’s appeal is that the tees feature hand-drawn, wickedly irreverent prints and big fans include Natalie Portman. Past collections include odes to Captain Beefheart, Graham Nash, Roky Erickson, and Bobbie Gentry- backed by a slew of Rotter’s crazy dancing hand-drawn characters. Recent press about the label has included NPR, Nylon, Spin, Daily Candy, Entertainment Weekly, InStyle, and Newsweek.

It's been a rad year for Rotter and Friends as Jess's illustrations for the label were made into a solo exhibition called Moontunes in Los Angeles at Garage Gallery in March, a month later her 4-piece capsule collection for Project Red was released globally in The Gap, and the label was responsible for hosting the first NYC live performance from Boston psyche legend Bobb Trimble.

This season, in their 6th collection, Rotter and Friends pay homage to Jade Stone and Luv (in partnership w/ Swedish label Subliminal sounds ), Ya Ho Wah 13, Betty Davis, and Badfinger. Fun things for Fall include a one day holiday trunk show event at Other Music in late November, a 3-piece collection of spiral notebooks for HEEB magazine which include scribble salutes to Leonard Cohen, Marianne Faithfull, and Marc Bolan of T. Rex, and a MoonTune version of Betty Davis will be included in a group show at 303 Grand gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn November 6th-20th.

Halloween, Vinyl and Dylan on This Week's BBiB

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h23/crash-landing/Things/halloween_glitter_02.gif

High there, Bee-yawnders... Halloween is fast-approaching, so I'm gonna dig out some great creepy jams for you this Thursday at noon eastern on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond. So what's the best version of 'Season of the Witch' anyway?! I definitely have a contender... I also will have some great tunes from vinyl that I just scored at the Record Fair on Sunday. Here's a sneak peek...

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h23/crash-landing/Things/halloween_glitter_02.gif

AND, thanks to our good friends at Sundazed Records, I'll also be playing some tunes off of Bob Dylan's Self Portrait album, which Sundazed just released on vinyl on Tuesday. Bob has always put on a lot of different musical masks over his 45+ year career, and this album has always been one of his most baffling. But as a listener who loves variety, I've always dug this double album filled with oddities.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61T0Q8Ei04L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Let's listen to some of the best from it...along with some Halloweeny-style jams, and brand-new old vinyl...on Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio on Thursday at noon eastern. Be there and be scared!

It looks like Carrie Brownstein would choose AC over VW.  Uh, yeah... http://bit.ly/DTfk0

Faust Interview and Exclusive Music This Week

Despite Faust being unable to make it on time to the show last week when they were in town to play the Williamsburg Music Hall, Margaret (the Prog Lady) and I were still able to still milk some exclusive stuff from the band. So right at the top of this week's show, you'll hear our interview with Faust, some Faust music, and even a Faust tune that was recorded in Hamburg this year, and burned to a DVR for us to play exclusively! A big extra special thanks to Margaret from No Pussyfooting for the leg work!

So tune on in to Beyond Beyond is Beyond on Thursday at noon, eastern, and I'll have that plus tons more music, including some vinyl I scored at the Atlantic Antic and a fresh Case for (Phil) Collins!

Alberta Cross on BBiB Today!

What's up, Be Yawnders... Tune in to Beyond Beyond is Beyond today at noon eastern to hear lots of great jams and tunes, and I'll be talking to Alberta Cross...a band that Rolling Stone just deemed 'stoner-rock revivalists.' After a summer of touring and festing at Bonnaroo and Coachella and a very critically-acclaimed and well-received first EP, they are ready to drop their first full-length, Broken Side of Time, on Tuesday, September 22nd. They'll also be playing for us live for us in the studio. Some come along to the land of beyond on East Village Radio where nice things happen to your ears.

Bryan Scary on Beyond Beyond is Beyond

Greetings Bee Yonders,

This week I will be welcoming the super-talented Bryan Scary of Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears fame! I've been championing these guys since last year when I chose their Flight of the Knife album as one of the best new releases of 2008.
"[Bryan Scary & The Shredding Tears] revives everything you love about psychedelic pop..." - New York Post

Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears will release their Mad Valentines EP on Elijah Woods' Simian Records and Brooklyn-based Old Flame Records on October 27th, just in time for Halloween.

Plus plenty more hot rocks and phazed cookies on this week's Beyond Beyond is Beyond on East Village Radio, live Thursday...noon to 2:00pm Eastern~! Cheers!
P.S. - BBiB is on Twitter, are you?

Beatles Remasters & Corn Mo on BBiB!

Hey B. Yonders... I've got a hefty show coming up this week. I will be welcoming the amazing Corn Mo to the show who is releasing an album called Diorama of the Golden Lion with his band .357 Lover later this month. It is dramatically and epically rockin', you better believe!

Says Ben Folds about the band: ".357 Lover are too good. I doubt many people will like this because music audiences in general aren't smart enough for this kind of quality. Only years from now will people understand what they're missing. Ridicule them all you like. Ignore them, but history will not ignore .357 Lover. You are f*cking up if you don't get it...”

And if that weren't enough, in the first hour of the show, I will be playing newly-remastered Beatles songs since I got my hands on them a week early. So tune in and check out the sonic superiority! I'll also play some other stuff that I'm not sure about yet, so come be surprised with me...or even request stuff at beyondbeyondisbeyond (at) gmail (dot) com or Tweet requests to BBiB!

See you at noon Thursday live at noon here on East Village Radio.

Cheers!

Mike

Beyond Pussyfooting...

The lovely and talented Margaret the Prog Lady from EVR's own No Pussyfooting show will be manning my usual noon to 2:00 decks this Thursday, August 6th. I will be away with Ranyart and QoQuaq on the Moorglade Mover. Margaret will be spinning a nice blend of the things you find on both of our shows. And her voice is much nicer to listen to than mine!

Margaret will also be talking to Pete Bernhard, frontman for the 'neo-Americana' band, The Devil Makes Three. And Pete will also perform some of his solo stuff live in the studio which will make you wanna slap your knee and drink new moonshine from a dissed still life. His solo album is out on Milan Records on September 15th and he has two NYC shows this week...

Thursday, August 6th at the Living Room

Saturday, August 8th at Southpaw (opening for the amazing Seasick Steve)

Pete Bernhard

So be sure to tune in as usual on Thursday, noon to 2, live on eastvillageradio.com for Beyond Beyond is Beyond, with your special guest host, Margaret the Prog Lady. She claims it will be lots of fun. Until next week...I'll miss you!

BFF...Mike

No Audio, So Photos...

Hey dudes,

Here's my first blog post for the new EVR site.  You may have noticed that my show has been dark for the past several days, but I can promise that I'll have a show up here at least by Thursday...since I'll be recording one then!  Then new site's looking pretty hot, but bear with us while the kinks/Kinks are worked out.

In the meantime, I have an iPhone photo showcase on the iPhoneography blog.  Check out the pics...

See ya on Thursday.  Lots of new tunes...and tons of oldies!

Cheers!
Mike
